Predator Compensation

Last updated on June 25, 2025

Cattle and sheep producers whose livestock were killed by a wild predator, can receive Agriculture Wildlife Program (AWP) compensation of up to 80% of the animal's value. Budgetary constraints may result in compensation levels or methodology being adjusted.

Only losses caused by the following designated wildlife, which are not held in captivity will be considered:

  • Bear
  • Bobcat
  • Cougar
  • Coyote
  • Lynx
  • Raptor
  • Raven
  • Wolf

Compensation will be based on:

  • The carcass is preserved for inspection
  • An inspection of the carcass and the kill site confirms:
    • Type of livestock loss is eligible; cattle or sheep,
    • Age and classification (e.g. cross bred heifer) of killed animal, and
    • Best management practices were being followed
  • Previous year's market value for the age and classification of the animal killed will be used.
