Short-term rental registration

Last updated on June 4, 2025

Short-term rental hosts, platforms and strata hotel platforms in B.C. must register and pay annual registration fees. Learn more on this page.

Registration Overview

To help more families find a place to live, and to build on actions underway to make homes available for people, and not for speculators, the Province is launching a new short-term rental registry. Registration fees will support the short-term rental enforcement program and help ensure homes are being used for people living and working in B.C.

Hosts, platforms, and strata hotel platforms operating in B.C. must follow a simple online process to register with the Province by May 1, 2025.

Prior to registering, please review the information on the following pages that explain the registration process and requirements for each applicant type. Applicants are encouraged to review these requirements carefully.

Failure to register

Consequences for failure to register have been extended to begin June 2, 2025, as follows:

  • From June 2 to June 23, 2025:  platforms must stop advertising the listing and prevent any new bookings

  • Beginning June 23, 2025, and going forward:  platforms must stop advertising the listing, prevent any new bookings, and cancel all future bookings.

Was your short-term rental listing removed? Here's what to do

Why was my listing removed?

Your listing was removed because it failed platform validation—a required process where short-term rental platforms check if your listing has a valid and active provincial registration number and required fields match between the registry and your listing.

Platform validation helps make sure provincial registration numbers are not being misused or duplicated by invalid hosts attempting to break the rules.

If your platform validation fails, and you have a valid provincial registration number, you can take action to get your listing back online.

If your listing failed platform validation you must take action, to avoid the following consequences:

  • As of June 2, 2025: Your listing will no longer be advertised or accept new bookings.

  • As of June 23, 2025: In addition to the above, future bookings will also be cancelled.

How platform validation works

Short-term rental platforms match your listing details with your registration on the Short-term Rental Registry:

  • Registration number

  • Active registration (not expired, suspended, or cancelled)

  • Unit number

  • Street number

  • Postal code

Validation fails if:

  • The registration number, address, unit and postal code details on your listing doesn’t exactly match the information on the Registry (even small typos count)
  • You didn’t include a valid registration number
  • Your registration is expired, suspended or cancelled

What to do if your listing was removed

Step 1: Ensure you have registered

Make sure your short-term rental is registered. Click the Register Now buttons above.

What to do if you are not required to register

Short-term rentals that are exempt from registration should not be removed by platforms.

Important:

  • All short-term rentals in B.C. must be registered, unless you qualify for an exemption.
  • Being exempt from the principal residence requirement does not mean you’re exempt from registration.
  • Check the list of exemptions to confirm if you qualify.

Tips if your listing was removed in error:

  • Make sure you have notified the platform that your listing is exempt from registration (e.g. select an exemption category when managing your listing)
  • Reach out to the platform’s support team if you need help

Step 2: Confirm your registration information

See some example addresses

View some examples to identify your unit number, street number and postal code

  • For example, if the address is 205 – 1330 41st, Lakeville, BC, VA1 B2C, then:
    • Unit number is 205
    • Street number is 1330
    • Postal code is VA1 B2C
  • If the address is Unit 5A 1834 Summer Ave, Mountainville, BC, VA1 3V4, then:
    • Unit number is 5A
    • Street number is 1834
    • Postal code is VA1 3V4
  • If the address is 1234 W 23rd Ave, Lakeville, BC, VA1 B2C
    • There is no unit number. Do not provide one.
    • Street number is 1234
    • Postal code is VA1 B2C

Need to fix your registered address?

If there is an error with your registered address, you can request a correction.
Email: Registry.STR@gov.bc.ca
Subject line: Request to correct address - Registration Number

  • Provide your corrected short-term rental address including:
    • Registration Number
    • Unit Number
    • Street Number
    • Street Name
    • Location
    • Postal Code
  • Provide your full legal name, which should match your registration information
  • Include your request and authorization for the Short-term Rental Registry team to edit your existing registration to include the information you have provided, in the format you have provided.

Note: Submitting a request to correct an error in the formatting of your registration does not guarantee that your registration will be validated. Other errors or inconsistencies with platform information may still lead to validation failure and removal of your listing from the short-term rental platform.

If you are not sure of the correct format for your address, see some examples of correct address formats above.

If you are a strata hotel platform

If you have registered as a strata hotel platform (not an individual host of a strata hotel unit):

  • Log into your STR Registry Dashboard
  • Check that your registration is active/registered (and not expired or cancelled)
  • Write down your:
    • Registration number
    • Primary Building Address (not mailing address):
      • Street Number
      • Postal Code
  • These must match exactly when entered on the rental platform
  • Note: Unit number is not matched when validating strata hotel platforms.

Step 3: Update your listing on your short-term rental platform

  • Log into your short-term rental platform (e.g., Airbnb, VRBO)
  • Follow their instructions to update your listing with your correct registration info
  • Enter details exactly as shown in your registration (no typos or formatting changes)
  • For help updating your Airbnb listing, refer to our Guide on Updating your Airbnb listing (PDF, 645KB)

Tips:

  • Include your unit number only if it appears in your registration
  • Double-check for spelling and number accuracy
  • See the address examples in step 2 for correct formatting
  • Reach out to the platform’s support if you need help

When will my listing go back up?

After you update your listing with correct registration information, the platform will try to validate it again.

  • If it passes validation, your listing will be re-posted.
  • For smaller platforms, you may need to follow up directly to get your listing back online.

What if my bookings were cancelled?

If your bookings were cancelled, you can start accepting new ones after your listing passes platform validation.

  • Note: Some platforms may help with re-booking, depending on their policies —contact your platform for details.
