The Community Charter and the Local Government Act are key pieces of legislation that provide local governments with broad powers and tools that enable them to take action to support small businesses and community economic development. This webinar will provide an overview of the legislative framework and principles of the local government system in British Columbia related to economic development.
First, we will hear from officials from the B.C. Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing who will provide an overview of local government legislation and some of the economic development tools that are available through the local government system. Then Emanuel Machado, the Chief Administrative Officer from the Open for Business award winning Town of Gibsons, will share some of the successful community economic development work that has been supported by local government legislation.
This webinar will be held during Small Business week and the Open for Business Awards will be accepting nominations. At the end of the webinar we will be joined by a member of the Small Business Roundtable who will provide a walkthrough of any changes to the application process and be able to answer any questions you may have about the awards!

It’s been one year since the legalization of non-medical cannabis in Canada. Over the last year, the industry has undergone significant transformation: nearly 60 federal production licenses have been issued in British Columbia alone. Evidence so far indicates many small-scale producers have faced unique barriers to entering and succeeding in Canada’s licensed cannabis framework. This webinar will provide entrepreneurs and communities interested in small-scale cannabis production with an overview of the regulatory framework, share supports available to small-scale cannabis businesses through the Community Futures network, and discuss tips and insights learned from a successful micro-cultivation licence holder.
Register for this 1.5 hour webinar to learn and ask questions about key success factors for small-scale producers interested in a federal micro-class licence.
Speakers: A representative from B.C.’s Cannabis Legalization & Regulation Secretariat; Shannon Ross, a Cannabis Business Transition Advisor with Community Futures of Central Kootenay; Tamara Follett, one of Canada’s first federally-licensed micro-cultivators
