Personal information collection notice from the Ministry of Transportation and Transit for its use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's/drones).
The operation of UAVs are regulated by Transport Canada.
The Ministry of Transportation and Transit uses UAVs for aerial mapping, photographing and videoing current and future highway corridor projects, bridge construction and rehabilitation monitoring, geotechnical monitoring (rock blasting) and environmental monitoring of areas affected by projects.
Photographs\videos and aerial mapping are taken with no intention of collecting personal information. In certain circumstances, it may not be possible to avoid collecting personal information (e.g., facial features).
To avoid collecting images from individuals not involved in the operation, UAV pilots will make sure to keep 100 feet distance between their UAVs and persons not involved in the operations and position their UAVs to minimize inadvertent personal information collection.
Due to the nature of the collection, it is not practical or feasible to provide each individual (within the video/photography range of an UAV) with a collection notice. For those cases where personal information is collected, the ministry provides the following collection notice:
The personal information is collected by the Ministry of Transportation and Transit under sections 26(c) and 26(e) of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act ("FOIPPA") for the purposes of documenting project work.
