View of Old Fort Road Landslide

In 2018, a landslide on Old Fort Road affected resident’s access to the community of Old Fort, 5kms south of the City of Fort St. John.

The road was repaired, however, after the heavy rains in mid-June 2020, the slide moved again.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure conducted a review of long-term options, which examined alternative routes into the community of Old Fort. The focus of this review was on long-term access reliability to the Old Fort community.

The review was a multiple account evaluation that studied reliability, cost, geotechnical, structural, environmental, hydrotechnical, and constructability considerations, and it determined that the best option is to continue using the existing route while conducting further geotechnical assessment to improve the understanding of the geohazards and identify potential improvements.

Further geotechnical investigations will be undertaken in 2022 to understand geohazards and identify potential mitigative work.
