Learn about ongoing engagement and consultation with First Nation groups as part of the Belleville Terminal Redevelopment Project.
The project is taking place within the traditional territories of the lək̓wəŋən (Lekwungen)-speaking people, represented by the Esquimalt Nation and Songhees Nation, along with other Coast Salish communities. The lək̓wəŋən People are the original inhabitants of the Greater Victoria region and have stewarded these lands for thousands of years, maintaining a deep connection to the land, waters, and natural resources.
The project team is working collaboratively and respectfully with Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation to develop meaningful cultural and economic development opportunities. This partnership supports Indigenous self-determination, reconciliation, and cultural revitalization, ensuring that the project aligns with the values, traditions, and aspirations of the lək̓wəŋən People.
The Province is committed to continue to work collaboratively with Indigenous communities by fostering long-term partnerships based on trust, respect, and mutual benefit. This includes recognizing traditional governance structures, supporting language and cultural revitalization, and ensuring that Indigenous voices are central to decision-making processes.
