Proposed regulation:

Remove the exception to wolf open season dates in Tweedsmuir Park.

Remove the note about MU 6-1 and 6-2.

Rationale:

Across the Skeena region the wolf season is August 1 to June 15 except in the portion of MU’s 6-01 and 6-02 within Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. The caribou population in Tweedsmuir park is part of the threatened Southern Mountain population unit and has experienced significant decline over the past two decades. In response to these declines, the Province began short-term emergency wolf removals efforts in the of Tweedsmuir-Entiako (TEC) caribou range in 2020 to support caribou recovery.

Having consistent regulations across the region helps reduce confusion for hunters and makes it easier for the Conservation Officer Service to enforce them. If this proposal is approved, the wolf hunting season would be consistent across the Skeena region.

Since 2020, there has been active predator management in the Tweedsmuir-Entiako Park area focused on wolf removals to support caribou recovery. Current hunting regulations in this area are more restrictive than elsewhere in the region, with a shorter wolf hunting season. Extending the season in Tweedsmuir-Entiako Park would bring the wolf season in line with the rest of the region and support caribou recovery efforts.

This change would also provide additional hunting opportunities for licensed hunters by adding approximately 3.5 months to the season. By overlapping with other hunting seasons, the added dates would increase opportunities for legal wolf harvest.
