Proposed regulation:
Close the elk LEH season in the McCurdy (1-12E) hunt zone near Muchalat Inlet.
Rationale:
Aerial elk inventory results over the last three surveys (2023-2025) have shown that the elk population in the McCurdy (1-12E) elk population unit is performing below expectations and indicates a declining trend in this unit. The population estimate for this unit has fallen below the thresholds for sustainable harvest opportunities (Management Plan for Roosevelt Elk in BC, 2015). The trend has been corroborated through engagements with First Nations, resident hunters, and guide outfitters. The exact cause of these declines are not known although a combination of unregulated harvest, predation, and habitat changes, resulting in reduced security, are thought to be contributing factors.
