Proposed regulation:

Extending the boundary of the 1-11A hunt zone for Roosevelt elk to follow the highway north along Nimpkish Lake and then northward to the ocean.

For more information, consult the Boundary Amendment Proposal Map (PDF, 182KB).

Rationale:

In the previous 5 years elk have dispersed out of LEH elk hunt zone 1-11A in the Tsulton elk population unit (EPU) (near Telegraph Cove). While this area is relatively remote, some elk in the Tsulton EPU have taken up residence adjacent to the hunt zone near Highway 19. The current boundary of LEH elk zone 1-11A should be extended to include the area adjacent to the highway to mitigate concerns of elk using habitats immediately adjacent to the highway and potential risks to public safety.

The expansion of the zone will provide diversity to the LEH hunting opportunities in the area, while at the same time increasing hunting pressure on the resident elk herds, mitigating risks of motor vehicle accidents and crop depredation.
