Permission of the landowner must be obtained prior to the hunt. Applying for an LEH in these areas does not guarantee that there will be elk present during the selected season. Also the private landowners may restrict the number of hunters that are allowed onto their land. It is the hunter’s responsibility to locate landowners willing to allow hunter access. This can be a long and challenging process with no guarantee of success.

*** The entire area in Zone C and Zone J of M.U. 2-05 and Zone B of M.U. 2-12, and portions of Zone A of M.U. 2-05 and portions of Zone A of M.U. 2-12 are restricted to archery equipment only. Much of the area within Zone C and Zone J of M.U. 2-05 is PRIVATE LAND.

Rationale:

The primary intention with these new hunts is to increase wildlife-related recreational opportunities in the South Coast, particularly for elk, which is a highly sought after game species in the region. Management related to Roosevelt elk in the South Coast will follow the guidance outlined in the Roosevelt Elk Management Plan. In all cases these new seasons are a result of relocation and recovery efforts, the minimum population will be greater than 50, and stable to increasing, based on a series of winter aerial surveys results. Harvest rates will be consistent with the population estimate, trend, and target as outlined in A Management Plan for Roosevelt elk in B.C. and as agreed to with the local First Nations.

In many areas we are proposing moving bull seasons forward from October 10 - November 20 to October 1 - 31, while shifting antlerless seasons back from October 10-20 to November 1-30. In some areas we are also splitting seasons. All of these proposed changes are driven by desire to reduce hunter crowding and improve hunter success.
