The public is invited to comment on the proposed hunting regulation described below.

Status: Proposed

Region:  Region 4, Kootenay

Management unit (MU): Region-wide

Regulation type: Hunting

Species: Cougar

Closing date: February 13, 2026 at 4:30 pm PT

Current regulation:

Hunting and Trapping Regulations Synopsis - Compulsory Inspection (PDF, 13MB)

Page 17: Persons who take a cougar in regions 4 or 6 must submit the animal for inspection, in the region where the cougar was killed, within 4 days after the date the cougar was killed.

Proposed regulation:

Remove the current requirement to submit cougars for CI within 4 days of harvest and require hunters to submit a harvested cougar, from Region 4, for inspection within 30-days of the kill.

Rationale:

There is currently no need for the quick turn around of information as the quota on female harvest was completely removed in 2020.
