The public is invited to comment on the proposed hunting regulation described below.
Status: Proposed
Region: Region 7B, Peace
Management unit (MU): 7-50, 7-51, 7-52, 7-54
Regulation type: Limited Entry Hunting
Species: Caribou
Closing date: February 13, 2026 at 4:30 pm PT
Current regulation:
There is currently no open season for caribou in the Peace region.
Proposed regulation:
Implement an August 15 - September 30 limited entry hunt for 5-point bull caribou in each of MUs 7-50, 7-51, 7-52 and 7-54.
Rationale:
Caribou hunting regulation changes in the Peace region implemented in 2022 included closing the August 15 - September 30 5-point caribou general open seasons in MUs 7-50 to 7-54 and the September 1- 30 5-point caribou bow-only season in MU 7-58. These closures included a commitment to review these regulation changes while wildlife managers and First Nations gained a better understanding of caribou populations and demographics.
Recent efforts by the Caribou Recovery Program have provided clarity on the status of Northern Mountain caribou populations in the Peace region. As of 2025, the overall population estimate for Northern Mountain caribou in the Peace region is > 4,000 individuals spread among 6 herds with bull ratios above the provincial objective of 35 bulls per 100 cows. Herds that have recently been surveyed show stable or increasing populations, and radio-collar data indicates strong connectivity amongst the Northern Mountain caribou herds. Most of these herds already have limited entry hunting seasons in the Skeena and Omineca regions and licenced hunting opportunities in the Yukon.
Current population estimates in the MUs proposed for opening exceed 500 animals and are restricted to Northern Mountain caribou populations only, with no chance of harvest on Boreal caribou or Southern Mountain caribou populations, which are both listed as threatened or endangered under the Species at Risk Act.
