Proposed regulation:
Implement antlerless white-tailed deer season in all management units in Region 7A.
Rationale:
The goal of this proposal is to increase hunting opportunities for white-tailed deer, which appear to be increasing in number and expanding their range in the Omineca region. White-tailed deer are generally resilient to higher harvest rates and as such, population declines are not expected. Higher harvest in areas like the Robson Valley, Vanderhoof and Prince George could also reduce competition with mule deer.
Expanding the area where harvesting antlerless deer is allowed in the Omineca region beyond the defined white-tailed deer range identified in the 2011 assessment (i.e. management units with more than two bucks harvested annually) would include management units that now meet this definition, as well as others that are expected to meet it within the next 5-10 years. Applying the antlerless season across the entire region, including in areas with lower white-tailed deer density, would simplify regional regulations while also providing more hunting opportunities.
