Rationale:
The primary intention with these new hunts is to increase wildlife-related recreational opportunities in the South Coast, particularly for elk, which is a highly sought after game species in the region. Management related to Roosevelt elk in the South Coast will follow the guidance outlined in the Roosevelt Elk Management Plan. In all cases these new seasons are a result of relocation and recovery efforts, the minimum population will be greater than 50, and stable to increasing, based on a series of winter aerial surveys results. Harvest rates will be consistent with the population estimate, trend, and target as outlined in A Management Plan for Roosevelt elk in BC and as agreed to with the local First Nations.
In many areas we are proposing moving bull seasons forward from October 10 - November 20 to October 1-31, while shifting antlerless seasons back from October 10-20 to November 1-30. All of these proposed changes are driven by desire to reduce hunter crowding and improve hunter success.
