First Nations Consultation and Engagement

Last updated on January 23, 2023

The Ministry of  Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation consults with First Nations prior to the issuance of Petroleum and Natural Gas (PNG) tenure. The Province encourages proponents to undertake pre-application communication and engagement with First Nations when operating in their provincially recognized consultation areas.

These consultation areas can be found using the Consultation Area Database. The Province has prepared a “Building Relationships with First Nations guide” that can provide practical assistance and observations for building lasting relationships with First Nations. Additional information is found here: Consulting First Nations.

Consultation Agreements

The majority of PNG tenure falls within the Treaty 8 boundary in Northeast British Columbia. The Province has signed a number of agreements that guide consultation with Treaty 8 First Nations. Where agreements do not exist, consultation is undertaken following the updated procedures for consulting First Nations.
