Sustainable forest and timber management is a priority for the government of British Columbia. Setting clear objectives and expectations in regard to forest management and forestry activities is one way the government works to meet the evolving public expectations concerning the use of the province's varied forest resources.
Managing forests for sustainable timber harvest, water quality, wildlife, recreation and other values requires the varying perspectives of many groups. First Nation partnerships bring Indigenous knowledge to the forefront and emphasizes an interconnected view of the forest and addresses the cumulative results of all activities on the landbase.
With the understanding that climate change is having an impact throughout British Columbia, the forests of tomorrow need to be planned today. Consideration is given to stocking standards, tree seed use and tree species selection, among other activities and interventions, at both local and provincial levels, to ensure trees planted today have the best chance of success in a future and changed climate.
First Nations knowledge contributes to sustainability and forest health.
Sustainable forest management ensures healthy, resilient and diverse working forests.
