Re: Balcony Guard Design, Article 9.8.8.8.
With reference to your letter of November 19, 1987, regarding lattice guards to exterior balconies of a residential occupancy.
The lattice consists of 1 inche by 2 inche wood members, spaced 11/2 inches apart vertically, with horizontal members on the outside face spaced 21/2 inches or 11/2 inches apart.
Article 9.8.8.8. of the Code applies, and we do not consider the design to contravene this requirement. We also find nothing to support the mandatory use of 2"" X 2"" for vertical members. Under the circumstances the design as shown is acceptable.
