Re: Lodgepole Pine Shakes, Article 9.27.2.1.

With reference to your letter of November 11, 1987, regarding acceptance of Lodgepole Pine shakes for roofing.

The Building Code requires Western Red Cedar for this purpose, with the shakes conforming to CSA 0118.1, "Western Red Cedar Shingles, Handsplit Western Red Cedar Shakes, and Machine-Grooved Shakes".

We have no information which supports Lodgepole Pine as an equivalent to Cedar for roofing. The species is classed as non-durable, particularly the heartwood, and resistant to preservative treatment. In addition, your supporting data indicates defects which would be unacceptable under the standard.

Under the circumstances we are unable to accept Lodgepole Pine as an equivalent to the requirements in the Building Code for wood shakes.
