BCAB #1681

Re: Exhaust Duct Outlet Weather Hood, Sentence 9.32.3.10.(1)

Project Description
This appeal concerns the weather hood for a residential kitchen exhaust duct.

Reason for Appeal
Requirements for exhaust ducts and their exterior termination (hood) are addressed separately in Articles 9.32.3.9. and 9.32.3.10. respectively.

Appellant’s Position
The appellant contends that the exterior termination is not a part of the exhaust ductwork and is not subject to the requirements of Article 9.32.3.9.  Outdoor terminations for exhaust outlets are subject to the requirements of 9.32.3.10.(1) only, which does not require them to be noncombustible.

Building Official's Position
The building official maintains that the exterior termination is part of the kitchen exhaust ductwork and is required to be noncombustible per 9.32.3.9.(6) in addition to the requirements of 9.32.3.10.(1).  In some circumstances, such as a roof termination, the cap is used to secure the rest of the ductwork.

Appeal Board Decision #1681
It is the determination of the Board that the hood is not considered to be a component of the exhaust duct and does not need to conform to Sentence 9.32.3.10.(1).
