BCAB #1399
Re: Wall Protection at Urinals, Article 3.6.4.6.
Project Description
This appeal concerns wall protection at urinals in washrooms in an elementary school.
Reason for Appeal
Article 3.6.4.6. requires the wall surface beside urinals to be protected by "impervious and durable material".
Appellant's Position
The appellant considers 2 coats of enamel paint on drywall is durable and impervious.
Building Official's Position
The building official considers the code to be looking for special attention to this section of wall finish so it will stand up to more than normal finishes, such as enamel paint, are expected to take.
Appeal Board Decision #1399
It is the determination of the Board that enamel paint on drywall is neither impervious nor durable in these circumstances and is not an acceptable finish adjacent to urinals. Enamel paint is not impervious to moisture and would not be durable under the regular cleaning typical in a school washroom.
