BCAB #1292

Re: Foamed Plastic as Fill Beneath Crawl Space Ground Cover

Project Description

The project in question is a single family dwelling in which an artificial crawl space has been constructed to reduce the floor area ratio and bring the dwelling into compliance with the zoning bylaw.

Reason for Appeal

The appellant has used foamed plastic blocks as fill under the concrete skim coat in the crawl space and the building official has insisted on sand fill and will not approve the foamed plastic.

Appellant's Position

The appellant contends the foamed plastic is an acceptable fill material and points out that is used as fill in road construction.

Building Official's Position

No comments were received from the building official.

Appeal Board Decision #1292

It is the determination of the Board that the Building Code does not prohibit the use of foamed plastic blocks as fill material below the skim coat in a crawl space.
