Re: Firewall Parapets - Armstrong and Spallumcheen Health Care Centre
With reference to your letter of January 10, 1990, regarding the elimination of a parapet to a firewall.
Your proposal indicates a required firewall terminating at the underside of a roof assembly; metal roofing, building paper and 15.9 mm plywood is carried over the firewall, connecting one side with the other. You suggest a sprinkler system to compensate for the reduced level of fire protection provided as a result of noncompliance with Sentence 3.1.8.1.(7).
Taking into account all the circumstances we must support the decision of the building official and reject your proposal. We are not satisfied with the principle, in this situation, of replacing a positive physical barrier with an alternative relying completely on the adequacy of the water supply in an emergency.
