Re: Fire Alarm Pull Stations

With reference to your letter of August 10, 1989, regarding the location of manually activated signaling boxes.

Article 3.2.4.12. requires that these be installed one every floor area near every required exit, and near the principal entrance. While no guidance is given on the meaning of "near", we would take this to mean immediately adjacent to the exit and in the natural path of escape. The user is likely to be under stress, and the signaling box should be as readily locatable as the exit.

In the situation under review, while we do not consider the proposed location of the stations to be ideal, any objections are insufficient to justify rejection. We therefore regard them as acceptable.
