Re: Fire Protection, Group A Division 2 Occupancy

With reference to your letter of July 20, 1989 regarding fire protection for a single storey building of A2 occupancy, facing 3 streets, and having a building area of 7,000 sq. ft. (650 sq. m).

From the information provided it is difficult for us to be of assistance, you seem to be requesting an all-encompassing reply which is not possible to give to your question. Your limited description of the building, which we assume to be unsprinklered, suggests that it falls under the provisions of Article 3.2.2.14. This already includes some requirements for fire protection, apart from those contained elsewhere in the Code. You also mention the use of a ceiling space as a return air plenum; in this regard we would draw your attention to Sentence 3.1.7.4.(2) and Article 3.5.4.3.

At this stage we recommend that you discuss your situation with the appropriate municipal building official, and if you then wish to submit a specific question with adequate support details, we will be pleased to assist.
