Re: Ventilation for Cooking Equipment, Sentence 6.2.2.3.(4)

With reference to your letter of March 20, 1989 regarding the application of Sentence 6.2.2.3.(4) of the B.C. Building Code.

The question has arisen due to the use of an additional cooking appliance, a domestic type of non-stick plug-in griddle. An earlier Appeal #687 enclosed, outlined the general principles which we felt would warrant the need for NFPA 96 hoods under Sentence 6.2.2.3.(4). Inevitably there will be marginal situations requiring value judgement, this is impossible to avoid, but the Code intention is clearly to accommodate the heavy discharge of grease laden vapours.

However, on the basis of the information supplied we would not regard the use of a domestic griddle in this situation, similar to the particular type in question, as sufficient to justify the need for an NFPA 96 hood. Accordingly Sentence 6.2.2.3.(4) would not be applicable.
