Disease reporting and surveillance

Last updated on January 5, 2024

We rely on our producers to report notifiable and reportable diseases to help us understand how these diseases spread. Together we can improve our response and better protect B.C. agriculture.

If you suspect your animals may be sick, contact your private veterinarian or submit a sample directly to the Animal Health Centre.

BC canine leptospirosis surveillance

BC veterinarians and dog owners are interested in the prevalence and location of canine diagnoses of leptospirosis. The BC Ministry of Agriculture and Food’s Animal Health Centre (AHC) Laboratory in co-operation with True North Veterinary Diagnostics Inc. and IDEXX are generating surveillance data on laboratory confirmed or suspect cases of canine leptospirosis in BC.

Wild bird mortality protocol

The B.C. and Canadian wildlife agencies are working together to monitor bird health.

Check out the ministry’s most recent reports on cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI H5) detected in wild birds and other mammals to see how public reporting supports disease monitoring in birds.

Report wildlife health issues

Learn more about reporting Wildlife Health Issues for other species (i.e., amphibians, marine mammals, sea turtles) on BC Wildlife Health’s webpage.
