Contraceptives – information for health professionals

Most contraceptives are fully covered for any B.C. resident enrolled in the Medical Services Plan (MSP).

How it works

• Prescribers do not need to complete any forms. They prescribe a fully covered contraceptive or help patients transition to one
• Patients do not need to register. They need to be enrolled in MSP. If they have completed the two-step enrolment and are still in the MSP wait period, pharmacists can apply for exceptional coverage
• All products need to be entered in PharmaNet by a pharmacist to be covered. For IUDs and implants, patients will need to book follow-up appointments for insertion

Procedures for prescribers and pharmacists

• Prescribe a fully covered contraceptive or switch a prescription to one that is fully covered. A list of fully covered contraceptives is below. Alternatively, use the PharmaCare Formulary Search. Click on the item's DIN/PIN in search results to view coverage information
• No prescription is needed for emergency contraceptives. Pharmacists must enter the dispense in PharmaNet (with their practitioner ID in the prescriber field) under the PHN of the patient who will be taking the drug, to ensure an accurate PharmaNet record
• Always check patient identification. If the patient is not picking up themselves, confirm that the person picking up the medication has been authorized to do so by the patient, as per College of Pharmacists PPP-54 (PDF, 155KB)
• Pharmacists may not charge for the drug, dispense, or anything else associated with filling the prescription

Covered contraceptives

If a client has a prescription for an eligible contraceptive medication, it is covered. It doesn’t matter what the prescription is for.
