The nominees for the 2021 Award of Excellence for Design and Contract Preparation – Roads are:

2021 Roads R.F. Binnie

Project: Highway 1 - 202 Street to 216 Street Highway Widening and 216 Street Interchange
Location: Langley
Assignment Contract Value: $4 million

The interchange at 216 Street was experiencing increased traffic demand and required improvements to address traffic congestion, accessibility and safety. The project included the construction of a new interchange at 216 Street, high-occupancy vehicle ramps, a high-occupancy vehicle lane and street widening with pedestrian and cycling access.

The design included two culvert replacements under the highway for fish and wildlife passage and drainage provisions within the median. R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. addressed public concerns and delivered solutions for issues related to safety, traffic, air quality and noise.

This successful project addressed growing traffic demand, improved pedestrian and cycling provisions and connectivity between Langley communities. R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. worked with field services, the contractor, the ministry, the Township of Langley and third-party utility companies to deliver this project on budget and on time.

2021 Roads ISL Engineering

Project: Highway 93 and Highway 95 Radium Intersection Improvements
Location: Village of Radium Hot Springs
Assignment Contract Value: $387,000

The Highway 93 and Highway 95 Radium Intersection Improvements project in The Village of Radium Hot Springs was undertaken to construct a roundabout to improve access to roads and local businesses. The project design was completed in Spring 2020 after being in regional planning for over a decade.

ISL Engineering and Land Services adhered to the ministry’s quality management guidelines and expectations. ISL Engineering and Land Services worked collaboratively with the ministry’s in-house designers and project team to deliver this successful project on schedule.
