The nominees for the 2021 Award of Excellence for Alternative Transportation are:

Project: Cable Ferries Replacement Project
Location: Southern Interior Region
Assignment Contract Value: $600,000

The Cable Ferries Replacement Project involved a contract to design and build four new cable ferries serving communities in rural B.C. 

The ferries are:

  • CF Adams Lake II, which runs from the southwest end of Adams Lake near Chase in the Shuswap.
  • CF Glade II, which runs across the Kootenay River on Highway 3A south of Nelson to Glade.
  • CF Harrop II, which runs across Kootenay River, on Highway 3A north of Nelson to the communities of Harrop and Procter.
  • CF Arrow Park III runs across the junction of Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes south of Nakusp on Highway 6.

The construction of each ferry took place at different waterfront locations and included vessel testing and certification, commissioning, crew training, terminal modifications and deployment. 

3GA Marine Ltd. produced high-quality designs and made innovative engineering choices that used specialized engineering tools. When warranty issues arose, 3GA Marine Ltd.’s team implemented practical and innovative solutions for each ferry route.

2021 Alternative Transportation R.F. Binnie

Project: RapidBus Launch for routes 1 through 5
Location: Vancouver
Assignment Contract Value: $264,000

R.F. Binnie & Associates Ltd. provided project management through the permitting, construction and operational readiness phases of this complex and fast-paced project. The project included corridor-wide construction on multiple routes, road widening, intersection improvements and installation of multi-user pathways, bus stops and bus priority infrastructure.

The RapidBus service brought fast, frequent, convenient and enhanced service comfort for customers. The five routes now have the combined capacity to move 12,000 customers per hour during rush hour.
