2025 Ecological Communities Changes

Below is a list of ecological communities updates made to conservation status ranks of selected species, additions of new species in BC, and changes in species taxonomy based on the most recent scientific data and information available.

Detailed information about changes:

Summary of changes is available in pdf or web format below. Refer to excel files (above) for full list of changes :

Ecological Communities

  • The conservation status was reviewed for seven ecological communities, and ranks for all seven remained unchanged.
  • Seven Conservation Status Reports were updated.

Name Changes

  • Three ecological communities were deleted because the concepts were considered equivalent to other ecological communities.
  • Fourteen ecological communities had scientific name changes. Most changes involved a change in name from Betula nana to Betula glandulosa (B. nana does not occur in B.C.). The name for Menyanthes trifoliata - Carex lasiocarpa was changed to Carex lasiocarpa - Menyanthes trifoliata to match the name used in BEC (MacKenzie and Moran 2004). The name for Salix drummondiana / Carex rostrata was changed to Salix drummondiana / Carex utriculata to match the name used in BEC (MacKenzie and Moran 2004).
  • Three ecological communities had English name changes. The name for northern mannagrass Fen was changed to northern mannagrass Marsh to better reflect its wetland classification and correspond with the names used in BEC (Steen & Coupé 1997; MacKenzie & Moran 2004). The name for mallow nine-bark - oceanspray - bluebunch wheatgrass was subtly changed to mallow ninebark - oceanspray - bluebunch wheatgrass to fix a punctuation error in the previous name. The name for buckbean - slender sedge was changed to slender sedge - buckbean to correspond with the name used in the Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC). Significantly, we added most codes from the wetland guide (E.g., Wf03) as entries under English Name to facilitate searching by codes in the B.C. Species and Ecosystems Explorer and exports.

Element Occurrence Mapping

  • 77 new Element Occurrences were published for 25 ecological communities
