Policy statement
All certificate holders in B.C. must meet defined standards of professional conduct and competence in order to be issued and maintain a certificate of qualification or an independent teaching certificate.
Rationale or purpose of policy
The standards for educators in B.C. communicate to certificate holders, letter of permission holders and the public a description of the work of educators. The standards describe what educators should know, and be able to do, and how to conduct themselves.
The Standards articulate the values and characteristics that distinguish B.C. educators’ work. They contribute to a safe and high-quality learning environment for students. For educators, the Standards also provide the basis for attaining and assessing their competency and conduct.
