Active transportation

Last updated on June 11, 2025

Active transportation is a clean and affordable mode of personal mobility and transportation.

If you get to your destination under your own power, or with the help of a device that gives you a boost—like a mobility aid, e-bike or electric kick scooter—that’s active transportation.

What is active transportation?

Active transportation is human-powered (or assisted) transportation that connects you to your destinations.

More and more British Columbians are choosing this clean and affordable mode of personal mobility and transportation as a convenient way to get where they need to go.

You might:

  • Cycle to work
  • Scoot to school
  • Walk to the grocery store
  • E-bike to visit a friend

When you include public transit in your trip, you can get farther, faster.

Let's move around with active transportation

Support for active transportation is part of the B.C. government’s CleanBC plan to make active transportation an option for more people and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and build a better future for all British Columbians.

The B.C. government is aiming to have active transportation and public transit make up 30% of all trips taken in the province.

Funding and investment

$74.8 million invested over three years: Active transportation funding has helped communities build over 400 active transportation projects, including new paths, bike lanes, crosswalks and more.

Municipalities, regional districts and First Nations can access funding and support to build active transportation infrastructure.

$85 million invested in 2024: The B.C. government further enhanced investments made to provincially owned rights-of-way in nine communities, increasing transportation network efficiency and improving direct connections to schools, employment and recreation.

Education

More than 41,000 riders participated in spring 2024 GoByBike Week: Riders of all ages logged over 1.6 million kilometres and saved 356,000 kilograms of GHG.

Educators, families, commuters and recreational cyclists can access programs and events that encourage people to choose active transportation to get around.

What we do

We work with our partners to help:

  • Build active transportation facilities, such as bike lanes
  • Deliver education and encouragement programs
  • Enforce rules that make the roads safer for everyone
  • Evaluate our progress to make sure we’re on the right path

Check out some of the active transportation projects the B.C. government has funded through grants to local governments and First Nations.

Research and tools

Research can help us reach our active transportation goals.

Our team and partners track the growth of active transportation in B.C. to learn what works. We want to understand the barriers that may be holding people back from using active transportation. We gather data from communities and organizations so together we can plan what to do next.

Report a problem

You can report a problem, like a pot hole or debris on the shoulder, along a B.C. highway. For issues on local roads, contact your municipality.
