Organizations Governed by the Information Management Act

Last updated on January 28, 2020

The Information Management Act (IMA) applies to all government ministries, to courts in a limited way and to designated public sector organizations.

Courts

The IMA applies in a limited way to the British Columbia Court of Appeal, Supreme Court and Provincial Court. These courts were covered by the Document Disposal Act and will continue to be covered by the IMA in a manner that preserves their independence from government. The IMA governs two types of court information:

  • Court administration information
  • Court proceedings information

Under the IMA, court information must be held, transferred, archived and disposed of according to an approved and published court information schedule. The Deputy Attorney General and the Chief Judge or Justice of the Court approve court information schedules and the Deputy Attorney General publishes these schedules.
