Nominees

The nominees for the 2020 Award of Excellence for Bridges and Structures are:

Big Rock Construction Company Ltd

Louie Creek Bridge

  • Project: Highway 20 Louie Creek Bridge No. 7491 Replacement
  • Location: Highway 20, 27 kilometres west of Anahim Lake
  • Contract Amount: $1.3 million

Louie Creek Bridge is an important transportation connection between Bella Coola and Williams Lake. Prior to this project, Louie Creek Bridge was susceptible to damage in a large seismic event.

The project consisted of building a new two lane precast concrete bridge over Louie Creek, with 0.65 kilometres of road works and disposal of the existing bridge. The failing bridge piles were replaced, precast abutments were installed with 14 metre box girders, rip rap was installed, the existing bridge was demolished and removed, and 600 metres of highway were aligned.

Big Rock overcame many challenges on this project, including periods of heavy rain, subcontractor absences and an artesian spring within a pile. This replacement project improved safety for the travelling public by replacing the deteriorating bridge structure with a safer and more reliable bridge. This improved the reliability of Highway 20 between Bella Coola and Williams Lake.

Big Rock Construction worked with stakeholders, including local First Nations, Project Manager Kevyn Hryhirchuk and Ministry Representative Rod Mochizuki to complete this bridge replacement project on budget and on time.

Dorosh Construction Ltd.
