Project: Old Skeena Bridge no. 473 rehabilitation
Location: Junction of Highways 16 and 37, Terrace

WSP Canada Inc. tackled the challenging task of overseeing the rehabilitation of the Old Skeena Bridge, a historic landmark dating back to 1925. Their dedication and expertise were evident as they seamlessly supervised construction, ensuring the bridge's rejuvenation.

The team recognized the importance of environmental stewardship. Understanding the critical role the Skeena River plays as a vital food source and its significance to BC and indigenous communities, WSP Canada ensured sustainable practices were followed to maintain the bridge as a vital link in an environmentally sensitive, fish-bearing river. This ensured the preservation of the natural habitat and upheld the bridge's status for traditional activities by First Nations, achieving a harmonious balance between infrastructure development and ecological integrity.

Despite facing unexpected complexities during the rehabilitation, WSP demonstrated remarkable agility by expanding resources and schedules while maintaining open communication with contractors and partners. Through effective teamwork and clear communication, they completed the project three months ahead of schedule, allowing the bridge to serve the community for years to come.

Project: Dunn Lake Road Realignment Major Works project
Location: Clearwater

As part of the Dunn Lake Road Realignment Project, the Ministry committed to the Simpcw First Nation to resurface a 10km stretch of the road. With a focus on safety, the project navigated complexities, including resurfacing under diverse conditions and realigning sections. Design challenges led to on-site adjustments for a cohesive result, prioritizing safety and reliability.

The team’s adaptability and innovation were crucial in navigating design intricacies, material surplus issues, and unforeseen circumstances. Clear communication channels, sustained community engagement with the Simpcw First Nation, and dedication to environmental sustainability were integral to the project's success. Moreover, the project prioritized the lands' cultural importance and historical value, featuring 28 known archaeological sites and eight chance finds during construction. Rigorous archaeological protocols and collaboration with the Contractor ensured no schedule delays, demonstrating a harmonious integration of construction activities with cultural and historical preservation efforts.

McElhanney Ltd.'s foresight and environmental resilience were pivotal in ensuring operational continuity. The collective efforts of all involved safeguarded accessibility and functionality, reaffirming the project's success.
