Guidance on wage or salary information on job postings

Last updated on February 11, 2025

Section 2 of the Pay Transparency Act requires provincially regulated employers to include salary or wage information on all their publicly advertised job postings.

This requirement applies to:

  • All employers with employees in British Columbia except those federally regulated.  See the list of federally regulated industries to determine if this requirement applies to an employer.
  • Jobs posted by employers on their public websites
  • Jobs posted by third parties on job search websites, job boards and other recruitment platforms on behalf of the employer
  • Jobs advertised outside of B.C. if the position is open to B.C. residents and may be filled by someone living in B.C., either in-person or remotely

This requirement does not apply to:

  • General “help wanted” posters that don’t advertise a specific opportunity
  • General recruitment campaigns that don’t mention specific job opportunities
  • Jobs that are not posted publicly

Posted wage or salary information should be the employer’s reasonable expectation of pay for the job at the time of posting.  Applicants can still request a salary outside of the advertised range, and employers can offer a pay rate outside that range. Ultimately, it is up to both parties to agree on the final salary.

Examples that meet the requirement:

  • $20 per hour
  • $20-$30 per hour
  • $40,000 per year
  • $40,000 - $60,000 per year

Examples that do not meet the requirement:

  • $20 per hour and up
  • Up to $30 per hour

Employers do not need to include (but may voluntarily include):

  • Bonus pay
  • Overtime pay
  • Commissions
  • Tips
  • Benefits

Currently, the Province is not setting limits on how wide an advertised wage or salary range can be; it is up to the employer. In the future, the Province may provide additional guidance or introduce regulations on maximum advertised ranges if necessary.
