As a key component of the SAJE program, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) is working to improve housing supports for young adults with care experience. We want youth transitioning to adulthood to have the supports, services, tools and relationship-based networks they need to thrive.
In recognition of these temporary pandemic housing measures becoming permanent, youth and young adults with government care experience helped select new names for Temporary Housing Agreements and Temporary Support Agreements – now called SAJE Housing Agreements (SHAs) and SAJE Support Agreements (SSAs).
The Ministry’s Youth Advisory Council, a group of young adults who use their lived experience with the government's care system to improve the quality of care for B.C. children and youth, were instrumental in naming these supports.
SHAs and SSAs provide up to $1,250 per month to eligible young adults between the ages of 19 and 21 maintain their pre-19 housing or help to cover their living expenses (for a maximum of 24 months). Young adults eligible for, or on a SHA, can move from a SHA to a SSA at any time between their 19th and 21st birthday.
