B.C. and the Haida Nation signed an agreement on the next phase of Aboriginal Title implementation on April 14, 2024, and introduced legislation (Bill 25) on April 22, 2024, which was adopted into law May 16, 2024, and is now in effect. The agreement – along with the supporting legislation – legally recognizes Haida Aboriginal title throughout Haida Gwaii. It is the first law of its kind in Canadian history. The Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) has a constitutionally established definition of its citizenship. The Council negotiates on behalf of all its citizens, and its structure includes the participation of representatives which are directly elected by its citizens to the CHN and representatives of both Haida Band Councils.
