The Ministry of Education and Child Care approves all external credentials before they are added to the Course Registry. To be approved, external credentials must meet or exceed the level, depth, breadth, rigour, and quality of ministry-developed Grade 10, 11, or 12 courses. This includes academic programs of choice such as Advanced Placement (AP) and the International Baccalaureate (IB).
Any board of education and independent school authorities interested in offering new or updated AP and IB courses should work with the appropriate external credential provider to prepare an application to the ministry. Schools must work with the external credential provider to document the learning standards of the proposed course. The applying organization (AP or IB) must review and submit this documentation.
Approval of courses is subject to the ministry’s evaluation of the course and its learning standards, including alignment with the B.C. curriculum and the B.C. Graduation Program. Approved courses are then added to the Course Registry.
Boards of education and independent school authorities must not enrol students in courses that are not listed in the Course Registry.
