Policy statement

The Ministry of Education and Child Care will fund the delivery by boards of education of a locally developed preparation course for adult students preparing to write the GED® test.

Rationale or purpose of policy

The GED® credential is an international document accepted by many employers and post-secondary institutions as evidence of a basic level of education. Although the GED® credential does not use Ministry of Education and Child Care curriculum, it meets the needs of some learners who are not working towards the B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) or the B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood).

Authority

Policy in full

The Ministry of Education and Child Care will fund the delivery by boards of education of a locally developed preparation course for adult students preparing to write the GED® test. For those students wanting to pursue academic upgrading, please refer to the adult graduation program website for more information. Funding for a preparation course will be subject to the Adult Funding Policy. The Ministry of Education and Child Care does not fund students to write the GED® test. The preparation course cannot be used for credit for either the B.C. Certificate of Graduation (Dogwood Diploma) or the B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood). The Ministry of Education and Child Care will only fund the locally developed preparation course as one course, not as five courses for each subject area of the GED® test. The Ministry of Education and Child Care will not fund school-aged students to enroll in a preparation course for the GED® test.

Procedures

The Ministry of Education and Child Care will fund boards of education offering a preparation course for the GED® test to adult students which report those students on Form 1701. Boards offering a preparation course for the GED® test must follow district procedure for the submission and acceptance of locally-developed courses.
