Modernizing data services

People expect easy access to their data, so they know what has been collected and used. There is a growing expectation that we provide citizens transparent, open, and secure access to their data.

We need to establish verified data sources that are supported by:

• Modern technology
• Strong governance practices

Specifically for high value data that is commonly used such as names of schools, parks, and roadways. This will make data easier to:

• Collect
• Share
• Update across government

This will create efficiencies, trusted data, and cost savings.

Key actions

• Data registers to share or disseminate data across government and to the public 
• Improved access to open (non-personal, non-sensitive) data and licensed government data based on the needs of the tech sector, local government, and non-profit organizations 
• Enhanced BC Data Catalogue with an increased number and variety of datasets available

Project example: Enhancing the BC Data Catalogue

An enhanced BC Data Catalogue has been launched. It enables users to make decisions and improve programs and services. Users include:

• Government
• B.C. tech sector
• Non-profit organization
• Small businesses

The BC Data Catalogue provides access to over 3,000 sets of data. Some data sets are open access, and some are available for use through licences. The Catalogue also references applications and web services available for use with each dataset. This means users can easily find the data and related applications in one place. 

In addition to the new BC Data Catalogue, research with government and non-government users is planned. This will help identify any remaining barriers to sharing and accessing data through the Catalogue. This research will inform improvements to the Catalogue to increase contribution and use. We will continue to prioritize access to licensed and open data.
