New and young worker orientation

Before you start work, you'll receive health and safety orientation and training specific to your workplace. Topics could include workplace health and safety rules, emergency procedures, working alone, bullying and harassment, protective equipment and hazards you may be exposed to.

During your first week, you and your supervisor will review all required employment documentation. You'll talk about:

  • Your role and business area
  • Resources and tools for daily activities
  • Resources for BC Public Service employees
  • Resources for your specific workplace
  • Services provided by other public service employees
  • The workplace environment 
  • Employment standards
  • Health policies and procedures

To start, read Occupational Safety and Health HR Policy 04 (PDF, 206KB). This policy statement supports the core policy objective of ensuring 'the public service promotes a safe and healthy workplace that supports the well-being of workers.'

After you read HR Policy 4, your supervisor will review the New Employee Health & Safety Orientation (PDF, 225KB) with you.
