Accessibility: Related to removing barriers that prevent equal and meaningful participation in society. Causes could include attitudes, communications, environments, information, policies, practices or technologies.
Accounting: Related to accounting principles and practices. This includes the recording, analyzing and reporting of financial information.
Business acumen: Related to understanding business issues, processes and outcomes impacting business needs. Also related to providing quality insight on achieving goals and ensuring business success.
Change management: Related to understanding and adopting change at all levels. This can be for yourself or others.
Clerical: Related to administrative and clerical procedures and systems. Examples include word processing, stenography, transcription, designing forms and managing files and records.
Client service: Related to providing service to clients. Can be a principle or practice related to maintaining and building organizational success.
Collaboration: Related to planning or executing work with individuals or teams. These can be from the same team or across work areas or organizations.
Communication: Related to understanding and responding to different audiences. May include listening, verbal or written communications, problem framing or use of technology.
Computer and information systems: Related to computer programming, hardware and software.
Digital dexterity: Related to applying digital solutions and supporting culture or processes. Digital solutions include applications, tools, practices, platforms and technologies.
Diversity and inclusion: Related to supporting a diverse workforce and enhancing inclusion in the workplace. This is to ensure the BC Public Service is reflective of the province of BC and inclusive of Indigenous peoples, minority communities, immigrants, persons with disabilities and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Economics: Related to economic theories, principles and methods of analysis. These may include simulation and forecasting techniques.
Evaluation: Related to collecting, analyzing and using information to answer questions. This may be about projects, policies or programs. Generally focused on questions of efficiency and effectiveness.
Finance: Related to principles and practices of financial management, monitoring and accountability frameworks. Including reporting procedures, banking and markets.
Gender-based Analysis Plus (GBA Plus): Related to the assessment of how gender diverse groups of non-binary people, women and men may experience or perceive legislation, policies, programs and initiatives. Also related to the assessment of systemic inequalities.
Human Resources: Related to principles and procedures of the field of human resources. Examples include recruitment, hiring, promotion, training, compensation, labor relations and personnel information systems.
Information management: Related to the principles and procedures by which an organization interacts with information. Examples include planning, collecting, organizing, governing, protecting, using, controlling, distributing, maintaining and disposing.
Innovation: Related to creating, promoting or using new or different ideas or ways of working.
Knowledge transfer: Related to ensuring knowledge is available for future users. This may include organizing, creating, capturing or distributing knowledge.
Law: Related to the legal system, laws, legal codes, court procedures and precedents.
Leadership: Related to motivating, influencing or guiding other individuals, teams or entire organizations.
Marketing: Related to principles and practices for determining consumer wants and needs. Also related to assessing and developing business opportunities and advertising products and services.
Operational planning: Related to turning a strategic plan or set of ideas into a clear actionable roadmap. Includes determining phases or steps, defining activities, tasks and resources and establishing schedules.
Pacific Leaders: Related to professional development activities funded through the Pacific Leaders Scholarship program.
Policy: Related to the development, refinement or interpretation of policy.
Procurement: Related to the purchasing of goods, services or other works from an external source. Includes locating and evaluating potential sources and agreeing to terms.
Professional development: Related to gaining new skills or knowledge through continuing education and career training. Includes advancing skills, traits and competencies to support future success at work.
Project management: Related to the application of processes, methods, skills, knowledge and experience to project activities to meet project requirements. Requirements include scope, timeline and budget. Common activities may include planning, organizing and managing resources and risks.
Quality assurance: Related to the maintenance of a desired level of quality in a service or product. Especially by attending to every stage of the process of delivery or production.
Reconciliation and decolonization: Related to establishing and maintaining a mutually respectful relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this country. Includes dismantling the process by which one nation asserts and establishes its domination and control over another nation’s land, people and culture.
Relationship building: Related to developing and maintaining meaningful professional connections. Connections may be with individuals or organizations with shared interests (internal/external partners, customers, clients, etc.).
Safety: Related to building and encouraging a safe and healthy workplace environment. May include protection from work-related illness or injury. Or from the threat or fear of physical or emotional abuse, such as bullying, aggression, hostility or harassment.
Scientific/technical acumen: Related to understanding or applying scientific or technical concepts, principles, methods or techniques. These should be relevant to the individual’s work or organizational needs.
Strategic planning: Related to mapping out a vision for a future state and how to achieve it. It informs the organization’s decisions, goals, objectives and action plans to achieve the long-term vision.
Talent management: Related to recruiting, retaining and developing talent to meet organizational needs.
Training design and delivery: Related to principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction. Includes the measurement of training evaluations and impacts.
Well-being: Related to practicing healthy habits to support beneficial physical and mental health outcomes.
