Vehicles Subject to Inspection

Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (​CVSE) inspections and standards apply to both commercial and private vehicles in B.C.

The following vehicles require inspection:

  • Any vehicle issued a Notice and Order for Inspection due to non-compliance box 1 or 2 by a peace officer
  • Vehicles operating under the authority of the Passenger Transportation Act
    • Taxis and limousines
  • Buses, including a school bus, issued a permit under Division 11
  • Commercial vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 8,200 kg
  • Trucks and truck tractors having a licenced GVW greater than 8,200 kg
  • Commercial trailers or semi-trailers as defined under the Commercial Transport Act
  • Any vehicle, other than a motorcycle, owned or leased by a driver training school
  • Private vehicles with a net weight less than 3,500 kg and registering in BC from another jurisdiction
  • Emergency vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 8,200 kg
  • Industrial machines (X-plated) with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 17,300 kg
  • Farm logging vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight over 8,200 kg
  • Farm vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 17,300 kg

Vehicles Excluded from the Vehicle Inspection Program

A peace officer has the authority to direct any vehicle to a designated inspection facility for inspection on grounds that the vehicle is mechanically unsafe or non-compliant.
