Vehicles Subject to Inspection
Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) inspections and standards apply to both commercial and private vehicles in B.C.
The following vehicles require inspection:
- Any vehicle issued a Notice and Order for Inspection due to non-compliance box 1 or 2 by a peace officer
- Vehicles operating under the authority of the Passenger Transportation Act
- Taxis and limousines
- Buses, including a school bus, issued a permit under Division 11
- Commercial vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 8,200 kg
- Trucks and truck tractors having a licenced GVW greater than 8,200 kg
- Commercial trailers or semi-trailers as defined under the Commercial Transport Act
- Any vehicle, other than a motorcycle, owned or leased by a driver training school
- Private vehicles with a net weight less than 3,500 kg and registering in BC from another jurisdiction
- Emergency vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 8,200 kg
- Industrial machines (X-plated) with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 17,300 kg
- Farm logging vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight over 8,200 kg
- Farm vehicles with a licensed gross vehicle weight greater than 17,300 kg
Vehicles Excluded from the Vehicle Inspection Program
- Vehicles exempt by the Director of CVSE conditionally or unconditionally
- Farm vehicles, other than buses, with a licensed gross vehicle weight of 17,300 kg or less
- Vehicles licensed under Motor Vehicle Act
- Section 8 – Licences for farm tractors
- Section 9 – Special licence for motor vehicles used in industry
- Section 10 – Special licence for tractors, etc.
(proceeding to or returning from the work without load) that has a licensed gross vehicle weight of greater than 17,300 that are not included in Motor Vehicle Act Regulation – Division 25 – Schedule 1 - Section 21 – Registration of foreign motor vehicles and (registered and plated outside of the province and in B.C. for touring for a period greater than 30 days)
- Section 38 – Demonstration licence
- Section 41 – Transporters’ licence
- Section 42 – Manufacturer’s licence
- Section 44 – Repairer’s licence
- Vehicles operating under Motor Vehicle Act Regulations
A peace officer has the authority to direct any vehicle to a designated inspection facility for inspection on grounds that the vehicle is mechanically unsafe or non-compliant.
