2021-02:     Organic-rich Upper Devonian shales of the Patry and Exshaw formations (Besa River Group) in the subsurface of Liard basin

BCGS Paper 2021-02

F. Ferri,  M. McMechan, M.B. Richards, and R. Friedman

Middle Devonian to middle Mississippian rocks of the Besa River Formation in the Rocky Mountains are distal, predominantly shale equivalents to more than 1000 m of more proximal carbonate rocks and interbedded shales in the subsurface to the east. Although relatively uniform in outcrop, petrophysical logs in the subsurface of Liard basin allow discrete formation-level units to be recognized, thus we propose that the unit be elevated to group status in the subsurface. The lower Besa River Group is subdivided into the Horn River, Fort Simpson and Exshaw formations together with a new unit, the Party Formation, that is currently only recognized in Liard Basin. The upper Besa River Group is undivided and contains shales that are time equivalent to the Banff, Prophet and Golata formations. Of particular economic interest are uppermost Devonian organic-rich strata, the Patry Formation (new status) and the Exshaw Formation. Patry shales are deep-water basin equivalents to upper ramp carbonate rocks and calcareous shales of the Kotcho Formation which, in turn, transition eastward into shelf carbonate rocks. Organic-rich Patry shales reflect establishment of anoxic bottom waters that spread across much of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin as transgression peaked during deposition of the Exshaw Formation. Precise U-Pb zircon age determinations of tuffs recovered from cores at the base (364.354 ± 0.26 Ma), middle (364.03 ± 0.31 Ma) and top (363.07 ± 0.25 Ma) of the lower part of the Exshaw Formation and calculated rates of deposition suggest that the top of the Exshaw Formation in Liard basin is older than the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary (358.9 Ma). In north-central Liard Basin, organic-rich shales of the Patry Formation and lower part of the Exshaw Formation contain 6,196 x 109m3 of marketable, dry gas in a north-northeast trending zone that is 200 m thick and 20-30 km wide. These shales are at depths of greater than 5 km, producing over-pressured reservoirs and resulting in prolific wells when stimulated through hydraulic fracturing.

2021-03:      A geospatial frame data model to simplify digital map compilation and integration

BCGS Paper 2021-03

Y. Cui

Digital maps in the Earth sciences have long used polygons to define features such as bedrock units. However, although useful in final products, polygons are prone to topological errors that can be time consuming to correct when data are being compiled. These errors include gaps, overlaps, and slivers at shared boundaries that are typically hard to detect and fix. Updating and integrating maps by map sheet or administrative boundaries can cause the same topological errors and introduce further problems at map borders in edge matching, such as invalid ‘map sheet boundary faults’ across which features falsely appear to lose continuity between adjacent sheets. Furthermore, using polygons during compilation makes it difficult to track and link generalized features in finished maps to original observations and is inefficient when updating maps at multiple scales or of different vintage. To avoid these problems, we developed a geospatial frame data (GFD) model that introduces intermediate stages between the observation and map production stages in the data lifecycle. These data compilation and integration stages are used to construct feature components from raw field or laboratory observations. Although polygons are retained in the final map product, the GFD model dispenses with polygons and topology at the compilation and integration stages. The GFD model decomposes mapped items into the most primitive and detailed feature components consisting of simple lines as feature boundaries (the ‘frame’, analogous to a picture frame) and centroids describing features such as geological units (analogous to a picture that fills a frame). Only a single line is used to represent linear feature components and areal boundaries, including shared boundaries. The GFD feature components are not topologically constrained. These components capture all feature types, are easy to edit, and can be stored as discrete geometric primitives in a spatial database. The GFD model allows us to develop a data checkout process to reduce map boundary problems and complex edge matching in data integration. The data checkout sets up an anchoring mechanism on the GFD feature components after extending a mapping project area to include all affected features, rather than cropping them at the limit of mapping using a cookie-cutter operation. As long as sufficient metadata at the feature-component level are available, the most detailed GFD feature components can be tracked back to original observations. The GFD feature components are thus the authoritative source data to assemble finished products. We implement the GFD model and the anchoring mechanism in PostgreSQL/PostGIS spatial database, and use database views and materialized views to operate on the GFD feature components to create polygons and assemble features in finished maps. Without the need to modify the GFD source data, the database views and materialized views can assemble data products and maps at multiple scales and level of detail or for specific purposes. Customized products can be created by reducing coordinate precision, re-projecting the map coordinate system, simplifying lines, generalizing, aggregating, and filtering feature components, and applying cartographic styling and rendering. The GFD model and integration processes can be applied to any discipline that has polygons and lines in digital map compilation and production.

2015-02:     Application of lead isotopes in till for mineral exploration: A simplified method using ICP-MS

Paper 2015-02

A.S. Rukhlov and T. Ferbey

Elemental abundances and Pb isotopic ratios for 2.5N HCl leachates from Chehalis valley basal till samples (<0.063 mm fraction) highlight down-ice glacial dispersion of volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) occurrences. Despite the relatively young age of the Seneca VMS deposit and surrounding volcanic rocks (Middle Jurassic), the contrast in Pb isotopic ratios between tills derived from country rocks and tills containing ore material is 3-7%. This contrast is 2-3 orders of magnitude above the analytical uncertainties of state-of-the-art multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Our simplified method, in which Pb isotopic ratios are measured directly on bulk 2.5N HCl leachate solution by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS), is consistent with the MC-ICP-MS results. It also has low analytical uncertainties (0.4-0.6%) capable of distinguishing between tills derived mainly from country rocks and those containing ore materials. Direct-leachate measurements using a quadrupole ICP-MS lack the resolution for tracing <10% isotopic contrast. Although elevated Pb, Zn, Cu, and Ba abundances in till overlying the Seneca deposit identify the latter, they show different down-ice dispersion patterns. In contrast, Pb isotopic ratios for leachates from the <0.063 mm till fraction appear to be robust indicators of down-ice glacial dispersion for the VMS mineralization. The Pb abundances and isotopic compositions are consistent with derivation of the Chehalis valley tills from isotopically heterogeneous local bedrock sources mixed with variable proportions of lead from VMS mineralization. The relatively inexpensive method of determining Pb isotopic ratios in tills by measuring 2.5N HCl leachates using HR-ICP-MS constitutes a robust exploration tool for a broad range of concealed Pb-rich deposits including relatively young deposits.

2015-03:     Symposium on critical and strategic materials proceedings

Paper 2015-03

edited by G.J. Simandl and M. Neetz

The demand for strategic and critical materials has grown rapidly in recent years, as ever more technologically advanced devices and industrial processes make use of their unique properties. This volume contains extended abstracts of papers presented at the Critical and Strategic Materials Symposium held in Victoria, British Columbia, November 13-14, 2015. The Symposium coincides with the end of the ‘Specialty Metals Project’, a five-year collaborative effort between the British Columbia Geological Survey, the Geological Survey of Canada, and several academic and industry partners. ‘Specialty metals’, also known as ‘rare metals’ are uncommon, nonferrous metals used in quantities of typically less than 150,000 tonnes/year or derived from geographically restricted areas. The Specialty Metals Project ran from 2010 to 2015 and was supported by the fourth iteration of the Targeted Geoscience Initiative Program (TGI-4). The International Workshop on the Geology of Rare Metals, held in Victoria in 2010, launched the TGI-4 Specialty Metals Project and brought together an international group of research scientists and industry professionals. Interest in specialty metals was peaking in 2010 owing to their growing global demand, high value, declining exports from China, and the ongoing challenges of finding new deposits. These factors created a window of opportunity for Canada to establish itself as a world leader in specialty metal exploration and, potentially, exploitation given the favourable geology in parts of Canada. The two main components of the TGI-4 Specialty Metals Project included: 1) a review of specialty metal ore deposits and their mineral economics in Canada; and 2) the development of techniques to guide exploration towards ore-grade zones.

2009-02:     Nonmetallic Minerals Other Than Coal (Industrial Minerals, Gemstones and Aggregate) in British Columbia, Canada

Paper 2009-02

G.J. Simandl

Nonmetallic minerals other than coal (NMsOC) are key components of economies in developed countries. For the purpose of this paper, the term NMsOC includes traditional industrial minerals, natural aggregate and crushed stone, dual minerals that can be used both as industrial minerals and metal ore (e.g., magnesite for magnesia and magnesium metal; chromite for ferrochrome alloys; quartzite for silicon metal), specialty metals (e.g. Ta, Nb and REE that are commonly used in oxide form as industrial minerals), and gemstones.

NMsOC are an increasingly significant component of international trade. British Columbia is strategically located on the west coast of North America and has well-developed infrastructure in the southern, more populated third of the Province, including several deep-water ports, and a well-maintained highway system. Rail links British Columbia's industrial centres to terminal points across the continent. The Province has attractive energy costs and untapped mineral resources.

The main NMsOC produced in British Columbia are magnesite, limestone, gypsum, sulphur (derived as a byproduct from oil and gas processing), construction aggregate, crushed rock, silica, dimension stone and white calcium carbonate. NMsOC produced in lesser quantities include jade (nephrite), magnetite, dolomite, barite, volcanic cinder, pumice, flagstone, clay, tufa, bentonite, Fuller’s earth and zeolites.

The value of NMsOC produced in British Columbia during 2008 was estimated at $754 million; however, this estimate does not reflect value-added processing. In 2009, the value of NMsOC is expected to be lower than in 2008. Production of low-value, large tonnage NMsOC (with the exception of resources located along the coast) is constrained by the size of British Columbia’s industrial base and the needs of local populations.

Paper 2004-02

edited by G.J. Simandl, W.J. McMillan and N.D. Robinson

Proceedings of the 37th Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals held at the Victoria Conference Centre from May 23 -25, 2001, published 2004, 334 p..

The Forum on the Geology of Industrial Minerals has a long tradition. It was initiated by the late Professor Robert Bates of the Ohio State University and has been held on an annual basis for the last 37 years. Thirty-one meetings have been held in the USA, one in Bath, England, and five in Canada including the 37th Forum, here in Victoria.

The technical sessions focused on aggregates and transportation; value-added industrial minerals; diamonds in Canada; dimension stone; magnesite, magnesia, and magnesium metal; and exploration for and evaluation of industrial mineral deposits. There were 48 oral presentations and over 40 poster displays.
