Strengthening Abilities and Journeys of Empowerment (SAJE) Service Framework

Last updated on June 13, 2023

Youth transitioning to adulthood from government care experience a significant drop in services that meet their needs once they have reached the age of 19. They are in turn over-represented in adult social sector services.

The vision moving forward is that every youth transitioning from care into independence has the wraparound supports they need to achieve their full potential.

The ministry has sought the voices, stories, and experiences of over 2,500 British Columbians, inclusive of Indigenous Child and Family Service Agencies, community service providers, caregivers, ministry staff and youth and young adults, to understand the current state of youth transitions.

Our partners and youth have asked us to:

  • Coordinate and improve supports across government for youth and young adults from care beyond the age of 19.
  • Expand eligibility to ensure we reach more young adults from government care.
  • Create a housing plan so young adults can find and maintain safe, affordable housing.
  • Strengthen wraparound supports in post-secondary education and remove barriers to accessing post-secondary funding.
  • Provide connection into adult services and community networks that youth need to succeed.

The ministry is currently working with nine partnering ministries and organizations to develop a whole of government approach.
