Most recent updates

July 09

Ambipar, the HAZMAT response team, completed a sweep of the facility including the container.

No release of hazardous materials or issues with the container detected during the assessment.

The evacuation order and exclusion zone have been lifted. The container facility has resumed normal operations.

There are no identified impacts to human health or the environment.

As the situation has stabilised, no further updates are anticipated.

July 08

On July 8th, the Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) received a report of a potential spill of unknown material at the DP World Container Terminal near Prince Rupert, B.C.

Initial reports suggests there is a damaged drum within a container. Reports state the material is solid and contained within the affected container area.

No visible release has been identified; workers reported smelling odours around the container.

DP World own the terminal and have:

  • activated emergency response procedures
  • isolated the affected containers
  • established an exclusion zone
  • implemented a facility evacuation

Two workers attended onsite first aid. No other medical services were required for the staff.

DP World has retained Ambipar for hazardous materials assessment and response operations.

There are no reports of:

  • ongoing health affects to facility staff.
  • environmental impacts.
  • threats to the public outside the exclusion zone.

First Nations and the Port Authority have been notified about the incident.

ENV will continue to monitor the incident.
