Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF), Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV), Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (EMCR), Semiahmoo First Nation, Tsawwassen First Nation, Delta, Metro Vancouver, the City of Surrey, and Transport Canada (TC), Environmental and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), GFL Environmental Inc., and Arcadis Environmental Restoration.

February 7

BNSF crews are continuing salvage and cleanup operations. Work will continue over the weekend.

BNSF has installed silt fences to mitigate impacts from the stockpiled coal to the environment. BNSF is conducting water quality monitoring.

The rail track has reopened to train traffic today.

An ENV Response Officer was on site today.

Further updates will be provided once more information becomes available.

February 6 - 5pm

Site assessment indicates that 20 coal cars have derailed. Some coal has spilled as a result of the impact. The spilled coal appears to be contained within a drainage ditch on the south side of the tracks.

No waterways appear to be impacted.

BNSF crews are on site stockpiling the spilled coal. Mitigation measures are in place for stockpile management.

Tsawwassen and Semiahmoo First Nations have been on site conducting their assessments. Representatives from Delta, Metro Vancouver, the City of Surrey, and Transport Canada are on site. Metro Vancouver is deploying their mobile command post to the site.

Two ENV Response Officers are on site.

February 6 - 9am

In the morning of February 6, 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) received a report of a Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) train derailment near Surrey, B.C.

The initial report indicates that the derailment involved 20 coal cars.

There is a wetland in proximity to where the derailment occurred.

BNSF's spill response contractor, Nucor Environmental, is onsite to conduct an assessment.

Two ENV Response Officers are currently deploying to the site.
