April 21

On the morning of April 18, 2026, the Ministry of Environment and Parks (ENV) received a report from Canadian National Railway (CNR) about a train incident between Spences Bridge, B.C., and Lytton, B.C., adjacent to the Thompson River.

Five coal rail cars being transported by Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) derailed but remained upright.

No spill of material was observed or reported.

CNR, the owner of the rail tracks, mobilized equipment and resources to the incident site.

Coal was removed from damaged rail cars and stockpiled beside the rail tracks. The damaged rail cars will be salvaged. The stockpiled coal will be loaded into replacement rail cars and removed from the site.

An ENV Response Officer continues to monitor the situation.

No further updates are expected.
